On behalf of the WLUSA/OSSTF Collective Bargaining Team, I am pleased to announce that we have reached a tentative agreement with the University for a new Collective Agreement.

Details of the tentative agreement will be provided at an upcoming Ratification Meeting. We are currently working with the Human Resources department to arrange for release time for the meeting. Full details about the meeting will be sent out on Monday.

I would like to thank both the University and WLUSA negotiating teams for their hard work and dedication towards achieving this tentative agreement. This agreement is a commitment by both Laurier and WLUSA to continue our collaborative partnership.

Don’t let your colleagues intercept your glory… join in the fun today. This pool is open to all Members. Want to make it a team effort? Family members and close friends are welcome to join your roster.

Get in the game! The first match-up of the NFL season is September 10th. Send me an email at president@wlusa.ca to let me know you’re interested and I will follow up with the details.

Whether you know your stuff or planning on a Hail Mary, I encourage you to join in the fun… you may even get to see your colleague’s touchdown dance!

New Term, New Look

August 17, 2020/in 2020/by WLUSA

As we approach September, we are reminded of what the start of the academic year brings to Laurier: new adventures, new beginnings – and for WLUSA, this year includes the added excitement of our newly designed website, wlusa.ca.

The site was revamped specifically for the benefit of our Membership, from content to design, our Members were top of mind. The clean, professional, and streamlined design is complemented by improved navigation so you can find important information faster.

Explore the New Site

  • Check out all the Employee Benefits that you get as a WLUSA Member and Laurier employee.
  • Load up on some discounted offers through Member Perks.
  • Interested in getting involved? We have many internal and joint committees that you may be interested in.
  • Looking to upgrade your skills? Apply for the Professional Development Fund and receive financial aid to attend conferences and workshops.

What makes this endeavour even more special was the ability to have it done in-house. Paloma Forwell, a WLUSA Member, leveraged her experience as a web content specialist to breathe life into our old website. On top of her work duties, completing her MBA, and attempts to enjoy the summer sunshine, Paloma found the time to meet with members of the Executive to learn our vision and make it a reality. Many thanks to Paloma for her hard work, and most likely late nights, converting our vision into this masterpiece.

Cheers,
Keith Goulet

New Date – Annual General Meeting

August 10, 2020/in 2020/by WLUSA

While we all hoped that we would be able to gather together in a large room again soon to catch up with our friends, network with our colleagues, and enjoy a meal together, the government restrictions that remain in place to protect our health and well being have forced us to move the Annual General Meeting into the virtual world.

The 2020 Annual General Meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 28, 2020 from 1:00pm – 4:30pm. Your lunch hour and release time provided by the Collective Agreement provides you the ability to attend this meeting.

More information regarding the format and agenda of this meeting will become available in the weeks ahead.

Modifying your vehicle for summer?

August 3, 2020/0 Comments/in 2020, OTIP/by WLUSA

Thinking about installing a roof rack on your car for bikes or skis, or modifying your vehicle in another way? Always inform your insurer before you make any changes to your vehicle. Modifications can impact your insurance if they alter the vehicle’s safety, increase the likelihood of an accident or increase the value of the vehicle.

Here are a few things you need to know about the various types of vehicle modifications. For more information, visit www.otipinsurance.com/article73.

EDI and Indigeneity Information Session

July 27, 2020/0 Comments/in 2020/by WLUSA

The University has rescheduled its information session on the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and Indigeneity Action Plan to September 16th, 2020. Time and login information will be shared later.

Earlier this year, the University developed an Action Plan for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and Indigeneity as part of its commitment and core values, in an effort to realize and hold the university accountable to its EDI goals.

Current national and international events continue to demonstrate the need for more education and as an institute for higher learning, Laurier must do their part.

Did you know? Personal days are personal

July 13, 2020/in 2020, Did you know?/by WLUSA

Refer to Article 25.12.1 in the Collective Agreement for official language.

Wilfrid Laurier University Staff Association (WLUSA) Members are entitled to use up to 3 personal days per fiscal year (May 1 to April 30) without loss of compensation and benefits.

Examples of personal leave absences include:

  • illness in the immediate family (Article 25.16.2)
  • relocation of your household
  • preparation for an writing an examination
  • legal appointments
  • major property damage
  • additional bereavement leave (Article 25.3.4)
  • observation of religious holidays not identified as a Paid Holiday
  • extreme weather (Article 25.9.7)

The list that is outlined in the Collective Agreement is meant to serve as examples of situations where a personal leave may be requested. That being said, the language “but not limited to” clearly demonstrates that the above list is not exhaustive.

Requesting a Personal Day

When members request a personal day, managers have the right to ask whether the request fits under the definition of Article 25.12.1 but are not permitted to ask for details. Members are advised to provide their request in writing and with as much advance notice as possible.

The request for a personal day will not be unreasonably denied provided that the leave can be reasonably accommodated. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the WLUSA office at wlusaadmin@wlu.ca.

Bargaining Update: Surveying Membership priorities

July 10, 2020/in 2020, Bargaining/by WLUSA

On Monday, June 29th, I submitted our intent to bargain for a new Collective Agreement with
the University.

The Collective Agreement expired on July 1st. However, our contract stays in force during
negotiations. Please continue to follow the protocols and procedures, policies, and processes
just as before. Your Collective Agreement rights and benefits as outlined continue to be in
effect. If you have concerns about your rights and benefits, please reach out to your WLUSA
steward or the WLUSA office at wlusaadmin@wlu.ca.

Shortly after signaling our intent to bargain for a new Collective Agreement, the University
responded back with an offer to meet for the first official pre-bargaining meeting. It was held on
July 7th and was immediately followed up with a second meeting on July 8th. I am happy to
report that we have agreed to a process that will move both WLUSA and the University down a
path to a success a round of bargaining.

Both WLUSA and the University look forward to building on a solid foundation established back
in 1995 when WLUSA first certified as a Union. Our current Collective Agreement was first
established and negotiated in 1997 and has remained largely a shining example of how
collective bargaining can lead to a trusting relationship between employees and the employer.
Our pre-bargaining meetings resulted in us agreeing on the composition of our table teams,
future bargaining dates and a new approach to bargaining this round. We also agreed to an
aggressive timeline and a commitment to try and conclude bargaining by the week of Aug 14th.
Following our meeting with the University, I consulted with the WLUSA Executive to discuss the
timing and next steps.

This is where I now require your input and your priorities. The membership survey is ready to be
emailed to you. You should receive an email soon from SurveyMonkey. Please keep an eye on
your Junk Email folder if you don’t see it in the next day or so. Please take your time and
complete it. It will help the research team and the table team to appropriately prioritize our
bargaining strategies. By July 14th we will tally up the results of the survey. Then on July 15th
WLUSA will hold a zoom meeting from 10:30am to 11:30am to update and inform you our
Members of our negotiating priorities and brief. This will become our proposal to the University.
I would like to point out now the efforts and hard work of your sixteen-member WLUSA
Collective Bargaining Committee. Their commitment to WLUSA and all of the hours they have
volunteered have resulted in a strategic vision and plan that will guide us to a successful round
of negotiations.

I look forward to seeing the results of the membership survey and to speaking with all of you
about our priorities, plans, and strategies on Wed July 15th at 10:30am. Details about our zoom
call and presentation will be emailed out soon.
If I have failed to answer a question you had or if this message has inspired new questions,
please email me and I will respond.

In solidarity, always being mindful of our rights and protections, and that of our home Laurier.

Niru Philip
Chief Negotiator, WLUSA/OSSTF D35
