Labour Day 2023Better Schools, Stronger Communities & Canada’s Unions: Lifting Everyone Up

August 23, 2023/in Labour Movement/by Tracy Cochrane

This year’s theme is Canada’s Unions: Lifting Everyone Up.

Today, about a third of Canada’s workers belong to unions and what we’ve won has improved the lives of all workers. Imagine what we could win if half or more of us were unionized? Labour Day 2023 is our chance to encourage everyone to imagine that future. Regardless of which part of the labour movement you’re in, we all share a vision of a future where everyone has access to the care they need, when they need it, affordable housing and childcare, a future where we tackle the climate crisis head-on by creating good, sustainable jobs in communities across Canada.

So, let’s organize together, and lift everyone up.

Take this quiz to find out which Labour Superhero you are!!!

Labour Day Picnic and Barbque

August 2, 2023/in Did you know?, Social, WRLC/by Tracy Cochrane

It is hard to believe that Labour Day is only one month away and we can’t wait to celebrate the day with you and your family!

The United Way Labour Day Picnic is a great way to end your summer. Your local labour community has provided food and entertainment to make your day special! All we ask for in return is a pay-what-you-can donation to the United Way Waterloo Region Communities. New this year, we will have “tap” payment available, so you don’t need to bring any cash!

Better yet reach out to the United Way to find out how you can volunteer to help out for the day!

This year’s picnic is special to us as it has been renamed in honour of our Labour Council’s past Treasurer Ed Weidinger. Ed Weidinger was the WRLC Treasurer for over 25 years – the longest-serving Labour Council Treasurer when he died in April 2021. He was a life-long labour activist and dedicated to improving the lives of all Waterloo Region workers. Our community Labour Day Picnic and BBQ has been renamed in his honour.

Can’t wait to see you there!

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!

May 30, 2023/in Did you know?, WRLC/by Tracy Cochrane

We wanted to provide you with an update as to where we are at with the Enough is Enough Expo which is this SATURDAY from 10:00-11:30 AM at Carl Zehr Square at Kitchener City Hall.

We have a really great response rate from organizations that wish to host an event.  We will need volunteers to run some of the Labour Council booths during the event (and thank you to those who have responded. We should be good with obtaining the necessary equipment. If you are able to arrive at 9AM to assist, it would be greatly appreciated as it will be at that point where we will be able to assess our needs. I’ve included our two promotional posters to this email which you can distribute to your networks.

I think that’s it. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out. Thank you for all that you do and look forward to seeing you all June 3rd.

Taking breaks at work? New study shows they boost your productivity

May 8, 2023/in Did you know?, Wellness/by Tracy Cochrane

If your workload is piling up, you may opt to tackle it all without taking any breaks, in order to manage it quicker.

But a new study from the University of Waterloo suggests that heavy workloads that discourage employees from taking breaks could disrupt general performance, causing high levels of stress and fatigue that stand in the way of productivity.
