The Canadian Labour Council Indigenous Lobby Day 2023 (October 3) – First Nations, Métis and Inuit Delegate Positions

August 30, 2023/in Did you know?, OSSTF/by Tracy Cochrane

In 2019, the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) held its first-ever Indigenous Lobby Day on Parliament Hill, which brought together 129 participants from 21 different union affiliates to meet with 78 Members of Parliament and Senators in Ottawa. Settler and Indigenous activists stood together to call for action on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit people, access to clean drinking water on reserves, honouring residential school children and Indigenous education, and a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. While there has been some movement on these priorities, there is so much more to be done.

The advantages of unionization are obvious, so why don’t more workers join unions?

August 30, 2023/in Did you know?, Labour Movement, OSSTF/by Tracy Cochrane

It’s well established that unionized workers earn better wages and have better benefits than their non-union counterparts. Unionized workers also experienced much greater levels of job security during the COVID-19 pandemic. But if the advantages of union membership are so obvious, why are fewer than one in three workers in Canada unionized?

Labour Day 2023Better Schools, Stronger Communities & Canada’s Unions: Lifting Everyone Up

August 29, 2023/in Labour Movement/by Tracy Cochrane

On affordability

  • Working people have been dealt economic blow after economic blow, families across Canada are struggling to find an affordable place to live, put food on the table while continuing to see their wages fall further behind.
  • Workers are forced to pay for the inflation they did not create while corporate profits have reached historic highs.
  • When we fight for programs like universal pharmacare, dental care, and a national housing strategy, we help make life more affordable for millions of people in this country.

So, let’s organize together, and lift everyone up.

Labour Day 2023Better Schools, Stronger Communities & Canada’s Unions: Lifting Everyone Up

August 23, 2023/in Labour Movement/by Tracy Cochrane

This year’s theme is Canada’s Unions: Lifting Everyone Up.

Today, about a third of Canada’s workers belong to unions and what we’ve won has improved the lives of all workers. Imagine what we could win if half or more of us were unionized? Labour Day 2023 is our chance to encourage everyone to imagine that future. Regardless of which part of the labour movement you’re in, we all share a vision of a future where everyone has access to the care they need, when they need it, affordable housing and childcare, a future where we tackle the climate crisis head-on by creating good, sustainable jobs in communities across Canada.

So, let’s organize together, and lift everyone up.
