Apparently in the labour movement there are a lot of free lunches! I think that I have used that headline before in an attempt to lure unsuspecting Members to become WLUSA Council Representatives for their areas around campus. The Waterloo Regional Labour Council will also give you a free lunch once a year in Waterloo Park on Labour Day! The event typically runs from about noon until 4:00 in the part of Waterloo Park accessible from the Westmount Road entrance. It’s most definitely a family friendly event, with lots of activities and inflatable obstacle courses and bouncy castles for the kids. There is a live band to put you in the festive mood, because we all need it with the new school year starting the next day. The food is free, but donations are encouraged with all the proceeds going towards local women’s shelters. There’s even a raffle table where you can win some union swag, and the money raised there also goes to women’s shelters. Two OSSTF districts had booths there this year, where you can meet our OSSTF brothers and sisters who teach at the high schools or provide support to students and teachers. So next year if you’re looking for something to do with the family, head to Waterloo Park for an afternoon of fun and union solidarity. It definitely beats moaning and crying because another summer has passed us by!
