Updates on Bargaining

Niru Philip, Chief NegotiatorYour bargaining update

University Pension Plan (UPP)

In November, the University of Waterloo’s Faculty Association invited us to hear a report from an actuary about the proposed UPP (University Pension Plan) in Ontario. The actuary provided an opinion where they were not in support of joining the UPP as it doesn’t provide enough of a benefit to employees.

Protective Services Committee (PSC)

I am presently serving the second year of my three-year term on the newly created Protective Services Committee for OSSTF. (Formerly known as the Collective Bargaining Committee)  As part of the benefits sub-committee, I am tasked with helping to identify all the various benefits packages that have been bargained within OSSTF D35 Universities; these include Laurier, Guelph, Algoma, Brock, Ottawa and St Paul’s University in Ottawa.  This research and analysis will be of great assistance to us when we start planning to bargain again for 2020.

What’s Ahead for 2019

In the New Year, will we begin an awareness campaign around the EI Rebate program, which will lead to some decisions being made at the Annual General Meeting in April.

By September 2019, a call will go out to ask for those interested again in doing the challenging, but rewarding work of the WLUSA Negotiations Research Committee.

I would like to take a moment to wish each and everyone a wonderful Christmas Season and all the best for your Holiday break. May 2019 bring you much luck.
